Background

Kavya S. John is an Associate in Cummings & Lockwood's Private Clients Group and is based in the Greenwich office.

She joined Cummings & Lockwood in September 2019  and brings with her experience in all aspects of estate and tax planning, estate administration, and related estate and probate litigation.  She has developed all types of estate planning documents for her high net worth clients in Connecticut, New York and Florida, including Wills, Powers of Attorney, Health Care Proxies, Living Wills and a broad range of Trust vehicles. She has advised her clients regarding fiduciary appointments, disposition of assets, beneficiary designations for retirement accounts, life insurance policies and transfer on death accounts.

Kavya also has experience representing fiduciaries, guardians, conservators and trustees in Connecticut and New York courts in a variety of litigation matters, including in connection with the administration of decedents’ estates, probate petitions, real property disputes, Will/Trust constructions, Will contest proceedings, attorney fee disputes, fiduciary accounting objections, among others.

In addition, she has experience preparing federal and state estate tax returns and gift tax returns, as well as experience overseeing federal gift tax return audits and state residency audits.

Finally, Kavya has assisted her private clients with the formation and dissolution of private foundations, as well as with the development of partnership agreements, operating agreements and shareholder agreements for their privately held businesses. 

Prior to joining Cummings & Lockwood, Kavya was an Associate in the Trusts and Estates practice at Berkowitz, Trager & Trager in Westport, Connecticut, and an Associate in the Estate  Planning practice at Ferguson Cohen in Greenwich, Connecticut.
