Background

Joanne Butler is a Principal in the Private Clients Group of Cummings & Lockwood and is located in the Stamford office.  She has 23 years of experience developing estate planning strategies for individuals and families, as well as representing individual and corporate fiduciaries in all aspects of estate and trust administration.

Joanne advises clients with respect to the administration of estate and trust assets; the tax implications of complex estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer tax planning; and the preparation and filing of estate and gift tax returns, estate accountings and periodic trust accountings.

Joanne has represented both individual and corporate fiduciaries before the Internal Revenue Service, the Fairfield County, Connecticut Probate Courts and the New York County Surrogate's Court.

Prior to joining Cummings & Lockwood, Joanne was a Partner with Shipman & Goodwin LLP in their trusts and estates practice.  Earlier in her career, she was Special Counsel at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP in their Estates, Trusts and Tax Planning Group.  She also worked in the New York County Surrogate Court as an interim principal law clerk to the Honorable Eve Preminger and Honorable Kristin Booth Glen.
