Pro Bono

Cummings & Lockwood is proud of its 95 year tradition of community service. We encourage all of our attorneys to give back to their communities by making pro bono matters an integral part of their law practices and by supporting their efforts in various civic endeavors. Cummings & Lockwood's commitment to pro bono includes providing our attorneys with billable hour credit for time spent on approved pro bono matters. Each year, Cummings & Lockwood attorneys devote thousands of hours to pro bono projects. Rather than focusing on high profile pro bono matters that garner media attention, Cummings & Lockwood prefers to do its pro bono work quietly, with a particular focus on the needs of the indigent and the disabled. In addition, Cummings & Lockwood provides an office and support to The Pro Bono Partnership, a non-profit organization devoted to providing free legal assistance to numerous charitable and community causes. The Firm is also known for sponsoring and speaking at numerous seminars each year for both local and national charitable organizations.

The opportunities for pro bono at Cummings & Lockwood are not limited to "traditional" litigation-based matters. Our attorneys have the chance to do pro bono work in their field of expertise. In addition to trial and appellate work, pro bono opportunities exist in the areas of trusts and estates, real estate, tax, corporate and transactional work, and tax-exempt organizations. For example, one of the Firm's Greenwich associates, recently received the Connecticut Law Tribune's "Advocacy of Law Award" for her service on behalf of families directly affected by the September 11, 2001, terror attacks. She developed, maintained and trained volunteers to man the Connecticut Bar Association's Disaster Relief Hotline, which fielded thousands of nationwide calls from those seeking legal services in connection with the disaster.

Cummings & Lockwood's Principal-in-Charge of its Pro Bono Program, David Leibell, is resident in our Stamford office, and is a leading practitioner in charitable giving and the representation of tax exempt organizations. He works closely with Cummings & Lockwood's lawyers and staff, as well as outside organizations, in managing and promoting our pro bono efforts on a Firm-wide basis.
